Communication technologies
This section highlights government communications initiatives in New Zealand.
- The Ultra-Fast Broadband is the most well known government initiative. This is about creating a step-change in the provision of broadband services to the New Zealand public and businesses as part of the government's wider strategy to increase New Zealand's global competitiveness. The Ministry of Economic Development website is the source of information about this programme in New Zealand.
- Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) is a national programme to maintain and improve public trust in our radio, communications and emergency call service (111) systems. The Board of PPDR drives the programme to make sure that New Zealand's radio and emergency call systems are robust, reliable and future-proofed. This website describes this programme in some detail.
- The National Broadband Map shows where broadband is already provided by existing networks in New Zealand and where demand is not being covered. Suppliers provide data about location of their networks; organisations provide data about their location and need for better broadband. The Ministry of Economic Development is the owner of the National Broadband Map. It was originally developed by the State Services Commission in 2008.
